2007.0815-0819 1st solo exhibition "Cara de un Gato" at Le Deco gallery in Tokyo, Japan


Today's human beings have advanced greatly.
Humans can travel outside of earth and they can even explore the deep of the sea.
We can communicate with people in other countries within seconds.
However, there are still so many wars and so much violence. Why?

"Cara De Un Gato" means "The Cat Face" in spainish, this is a myth from a small town in northern Chile. I found this myth when I traveled there 3 years ago.

A long time ago, in an obscure time...

The God of Terror
The God of terror is the god who controls people or groups' feuds and violence.
His control is not just restraining when they are in a bad state of tension, he lets people break this state by using adequate violence at the right time.
The result is tragic for one side or for both, but it's certainly positive in a wider point of view.

One day he woke up, and discovered that he had lost his head.
What the hell happened?!

His Butter
He had a oily skin.
His face was always full of oil, some people who saw that, cut his head and sold his oil. They hardened his oil and sold it as butter, it is popular for its special flavor.

The Cat Head
The Bleeding didn't stop. So he grabbed his cat and forced it onto his neck. He then went out to find a head.

When he asked the flower, the flower laughed at his face.
When he talked to the lion, the lion ignored his words.
When he drew for the rabbit, the rabbit peed on his feet and jumped away.

He found that he is alone.


The Circus
The people thought his interesting face could make money. So they captured him and sold him to the circus.
He got so frustrated that his anger exploded. All hell broke loose.
After that, he lost control of violence and now the world of today is ruled by uncontrolled violence.

今日まで人類はすばらしい発展を成した。
宇宙を旅行することも、深海を探険することもできる。他の大陸の人とリアルタイムで顔を見て対話を交わすこともできる。
それにもかかわらず、まだ多くの戦争と暴力が存在する。なぜ?
「カラ・デ・アン・ガト」はスペイン語で猫の顔という意味だ。これはチリの北部にある小さな村の神話だ。3年前この村を旅行した時、ある話を聞いた。

昔のある日、暴力の神さま
暴力の神さまは人々の間の紛争と暴力を調節する神さまだ。
「調節をする」と言っても平和を守るようにするのではなくて、人や集団の間に緊張関係がある時、適当なタイミングで適度な暴力を通じて葛藤を解消するようにすることだ。
その結果は片方にまたは両方に悲劇的だととらえることも出来るが、大きな観点で見ると肯定的である。
ある日眠りから覚めた時、頭が消えた。
これは一体何なのか?

彼のバター
彼はオイリー肌だった。
彼の顔はいつも油っぽく、それを気付いた人々は彼が眠っている間に彼の顔を切断して油を集めて売った。
彼らはその油を固めてバターにして販売したが、珍しい風味のため非常に人気が高かった。

猫頭
出血は止まらなかった。神さまは彼の猫を取り上げて首から入れこんだ。
そして自分の頭を捜しに行った。
花に尋ねると、花は彼の顔を見て笑った。
ライオンに声を掛けたら、ライオンは彼の言葉を無視した。
ウサギに近付くと、ウサギは彼の足におしっこをして垂らしてから遠くに飛び去ってしまった。

サーカス
人々は彼のおもしろい顔でお金儲けが出来ると思った。それで彼らは彼をつかまえてサーカス団に売ってしまった。
彼はイライラし、その結果、彼の怒りは爆発した。
彼の怒りは収まらなかったし、その後今日までこの世の中は制御されない暴力に支配されるようになったと言われている。
